Below are the significant dates and corresponding events about the Fall 2024 admissions timeline for students applying during the 2023-2024 school year for admission in the 2024-2025 school year.

Important Dates:

October 3, 2023: High School Application & SHSAT Registration Opens

October 27, 2023: SHSAT Registration Closes

November 6, 2023: Test Tickets Released for SHSAT School Day Testers

November 8, 2023: SHSAT School Day Testing

November 18/19, 2023: SHSAT Weekend Testing ( 8th grade testers registered by October 27)

December 1, 2023: High School Application Closes; Deadline for Additional Materials

December 3/9, 2023: SHSAT Weekend Testing (9th grade students and all late/make-up registrants)

March 7, 2024: Offer Release (HS Application, SHSAT, LaGuardia)

Registration Process:

Students who meet the eligibility requirements register for the SHSAT online at Registration opened on October 3, 2023, and closed on October 27, 2023. SHSAT results will be available in March 2024 when offer letters are released.

Requirements for SHSAT 2024:

To be eligible to take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) for 2024 admissions, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an 8th grade student in a New York City public school
  • Hold a valid New York State Permanent Resident Card or an active US passport
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 85 or higher
  • Have strong attendance
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English
  • Register for the SHSAT by the deadline

Understanding the SHSAT Test

The SHSAT is a two-hour test that consists of two parts:

  • The ELA section of the SHSAT is a two-hour test that consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The questions are based on passages from a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
  • The Mathematics section of the SHSAT is a two-hour test that consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The questions cover a variety of topics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation.

Discovery Process

Students who are not eligible to take the SHSAT may be eligible to apply to specialized high schools through the Discovery process, an alternative admissions process that talents beyond grades and test scores.
